Launched at four Chicago homeless shelters in 1994, the Tax Counseling Project has grown in only ten years into the nation's largest free statewide tax preparation service for working families and individuals. Each year, trained volunteers spread out across the state at community colleges, libraries, banks, churches and other locations to provide free tax preparation assistance for families with incomes of $40,000 or less and individuals with incomes of $15,000 or less.
The Tax Counseling Project offers electronic-filing of tax returns at all community sites and, through our bank partnership program, will continue to help the people we serve open bank accounts for the direct deposit of their refunds.
In 2007, community sites will be open starting in January until April 15. For more information on free tax preparation services and a complete listing of 2007 sites, click here.
